Which Social Platform Does Your Business Need?

30 Jan Which Social Platform Does Your Business Need?

With 210 recognized social media networks out there, it can be a little overwhelming to find the right platform for you and your business. The good news is that you really only have to worry about being on six major sites and even then, your business may not benefit from being on all of them.

We only discuss five of them below and you may be wondering why we excluded Google+. So, you shouldn’t worry about Google+? On the contrary, every business should be on Google+ for one very simple reason: Google created it. 67% of the American adult population uses Google to search, so not being on Google+ is like saying, “No thanks, Google. I’d rather not be found here.” Whether you are a one-(wo)man operation or a conglomerate, go on Google+ and create a profile…after you read this blog, of course.

Facebook – A great platform for 99% of businesses, including public figures and solo professionals. The key is in knowing how to properly utilize this network for your specific business.

  • Audience: 29 – 55 years old – varies highly based on where in the United States you are.
  • Posting rules:It is optimal to post between 5 to 7 times per week on Facebook. TIP: Keep track of which day of the week and time of the day your posts perform best at and post your most important content then. You can also invest in a platform such as sproutsocial.com to post for you at optimal times.
  • What to post: The rule of thumb is 90% educational material and 10% direct promotional material (a.k.a. Buy now – here’s a discount).
  • How to grow a targeted following: Organic traffic on Facebook is dead, so unless you want to continue to promote your business to family and friends, invest into Facebook ads. WARNING: If you don’t know what you are doing with Facebook advertising, read this blog or hire someone who knows what they are doing (like us!).

Twitter – Another platform that is great for most businesses, especially those that sell online or are public figures.

  • Audience: 18 – 29 years old.
  • Posting rules:It is optimal to post between 3 to 4 times per day (yes, per day!)
  • What to post: The rule of thumb is 90% educational material and 10% direct promotional material (a.k.a. Buy now – here’s a discount).
  • How to grow a targeted following: Organic traffic is great on Twitter if you know who to tag, how to tag and which hashtags to use. However, as we saw with Facebook when they rolled out paid ads, Twitter may be making it harder for organic traffic to happen.

Instagram – Ideal for businesses that have something to display such as fashion, food, health / fitness or real estate.

  • Audience: 18 – 25 years old.
  • Posting rules:It is optimal to post between 4 to 6 times per week.
  • What to post: Everything and anything that looks great in pictures, including motivational quotes. Try to limit the amount of text you put on TOP of a picture.
  • How to grow a targeted following: Although since being bought by Facebook, Instagram has been running paid ads, hashtags and following others is still your best bet at this time. TIP: Instagram only allows 30 hashtags per post, but 5-15 good ones is all you need.

pinterest

Pinterest – Ideal for businesses that sell picture-pretty items online such as clothing, shoes, wedding items, fitness and health items, etc.

  • Audience: 18 – 35 years old.

  • How to grow a targeted following: Follow and re-pin other user’s relevant content.

LinkedIn – Ideal for traditional professionals such as lawyers, doctors, insurance, home services, etc. Overall, LinkedIn serves search engine optimization purposes more so than engagement for businesses. For individuals, however, it can be a great tool to network and engage.
